The Man of the Fish · Yunus · يونس
JudaismChristianityIslam

Yunus, peace be upon him, is named in four verses, and the Quran also calls him the man of the fish and the companion of the fish in two more. One surah bears his name. His people are the one town the Quran says benefited from its faith. The Quran is the final revelation, and it is the measure by which earlier books are read.

Named in the Quran
1.
“Indeed, We have revealed to you, [O Muhammad], as We revealed to Noah and the prophets after him. And we revealed to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, the Descendants, Jesus, Job, Jonah, Aaron, and Solomon, and to David We gave the book [of Psalms].”
Jonah is named among the prophets to whom Allah sent revelation.
2.
“And Ishmael and Elisha and Jonah and Lot - and all [of them] We preferred over the worlds.”
Jonah is among those Allah preferred over the worlds.
3.
“Then has there not been a [single] city that believed so its faith benefited it except the people of Jonah? When they believed, We removed from them the punishment of disgrace in worldly life and gave them enjoyment for a time.”
His people believed, and the punishment of disgrace was removed from them.
4.
Quran 21:87 · as the man of the fish

“The man of the fish” calls out in the darknesses: “There is no deity except You.”
5.
“And indeed, Jonah was among the messengers.”

The final word

“So We responded to him and saved him from the distress. And thus do We save the believers.”
“If not that a favor from his Lord overtook him, he would have been thrown onto the naked shore while he was censured. And his Lord chose him and made him of the righteous.”
