John the Baptist

A Prophet from Among the Righteous · Yahya · يحيى
ChristianityIslamMandaeism

Yahya, peace be upon him, is the son of Zakariya, and the Quran names him in five verses. Allah named him John, honored him, and gave him judgement while still a boy. The Quran is the final revelation, and it is the measure by which earlier books are read.

Named in the Quran
1.
“So the angels called him while he was standing in prayer in the chamber, ‘Indeed, Allah gives you good tidings of John, confirming a word from Allah and [who will be] honorable, abstaining [from women], and a prophet from among the righteous.’”
The angels give good tidings of John, confirming a word from Allah, honorable, and a prophet from among the righteous.
2.
“And Zechariah and John and Jesus and Elias - and all were of the righteous.”
John is among the righteous, with Zechariah, Jesus, and Elias.
3.
“[He was told], ‘O Zechariah, indeed We give you good tidings of a boy whose name will be John. We have not assigned to any before [this] name.’”
His name is given before his birth, a name no one before had been given.
4.
“[Allah] said, ‘O John, take the Scripture with determination.’ And We gave him judgement [while yet] a boy”
“O John, take the Scripture with determination.”
5.
“So We responded to him, and We gave to him John, and amended for him his wife. Indeed, they used to hasten to good deeds and supplicate Us in hope and fear, and they were to Us humbly submissive.”
Allah answers Zechariah, gives him John, and amends his wife.

The Quran

The final word
“And affection from Us and purity, and he was fearing of Allah And dutiful to his parents, and he was not a disobedient tyrant. And peace be upon him the day he was born and the day he dies and the day he is raised alive.”
The verses that follow in Surah Maryam.

The Bible

Where the Bible tells of him · Luke and Matthew, in the King James Version
Luke 1:15
“For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother’s womb.”
Matthew 3:1–2
“In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea, And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
Matthew 11:11
“Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist: notwithstanding he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.”

Christians and Jews read these Bible passages differently. This page presents them as the Quran frames them, with the Quran as the final revelation and the measure for what came before.
