Dhul-Kifl

Among the Patient and the Outstanding · ذو الكفل
Islam

Dhul-Kifl, peace be upon him, is named twice in the Quran, in two lists of righteous servants. Allah counts him among the patient and among the outstanding. The Quran gives no story for him, and commentators differ on who he was, which is why the Quran, the final word, is where we take his mention from.

Named in the Quran
1.
“And [mention] Ishmael and Idrees and Dhul-Kifl; all were of the patient.”
Counted among the patient, together with Ishmael and Idris.
2.
“And remember Ishmael, Elisha and Dhul-Kifl, and all are among the outstanding.”
Counted among the outstanding, together with Ishmael and Elisha.

What commentators say
Commentators differ. Some link the name to the prophet Ezekiel, some to other figures, and some hold that he was a righteous man rather than a prophet. These are reports of the commentators; the Quran itself gives no identification, so we leave the question open.
